Dobot CRA Series – High-Performance Cobots for Industrial Automation

The Dobot CRA Series is a modern range of collaborative robots designed for flexible and cost-effective automation. It combines high motion performance, precise positioning and user-friendly programming with a wide selection of payload capacities and reaches. This allows Dobot cobots to be used at compact workstations as well as in demanding industrial applications.

Whether used for machine tending, palletising, assembly or material handling, the Dobot CRA Series can be adapted to different components, tools and production processes. This flexibility makes cost-effective automation possible, particularly for small and medium-sized production batches. New products or variants can be set up without having to develop an entirely new automation system.

Seven Models for Different Requirements

The Dobot CRA Series includes the CR3A, CR5A, CR7A, CR10A, CR12A, CR16A and CR20A models. The range therefore covers maximum payload capacities from 3 to 20 kilograms and reaches from 620 to 1,700 millimetres.

The compact CR3A, CR5A and CR7A models are particularly suitable for assembly work, quality inspection, pick-and-place applications and handling smaller components. The CR10A and CR12A provide greater reach and can be used flexibly with CNC machines, assembly workstations and packaging lines.

For applications involving heavier components, the CR16A and CR20A are available. These models are suitable for tasks such as machine tending, palletising heavier products and handling larger workpieces. The graduated model range allows the robot to be selected according to the required payload, reach and cycle time.

High Speed and Precise Movements

The robots in the Dobot CRA Series achieve a maximum linear speed of up to two metres per second. Depending on the model, repeatability ranges from ±0.02 to ±0.05 millimetres. This allows the cobots to pick up, position and place workpieces reliably.

Powerful joints and fast internal communication enable smooth movements and short response times. This is particularly important for repetitive handling operations where consistent cycle times and reliable process quality are required.

The robot arms are rated to IP54 and can be operated within a temperature range of 0 to 50 degrees Celsius. They are therefore suitable for a wide variety of industrial production environments.

Simple Programming with DobotStudio Pro

The Dobot CRA Series is programmed using DobotStudio Pro. A graphical block-based programming environment is available for straightforward applications. Individual program blocks can be combined clearly and intuitively, allowing movements and process sequences to be created without extensive programming knowledge.

For more complex tasks, the software also supports LUA script programming. Experienced users can therefore implement custom functions, calculations and specialised process sequences. Depending on the selected equipment, the robot can be operated using a computer, tablet or teach pendant.

DobotStudio Pro also supports process packages for applications such as palletising, welding and CNC machine tending. Recurring sequences can be configured using parameters, helping applications to be commissioned more quickly. A virtual controller also enables programs to be prepared, tested and optimised offline without the robot being permanently connected to the programming workstation.

Flexible Integration into Machines and Systems

The Dobot CRA Series supports various industrial communication protocols for connecting to machines, PLCs and higher-level systems. These include PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU.

The robot controller provides numerous digital and analogue inputs and outputs. Both PNP and NPN circuits are supported. This allows the system to process signals from CNC machines, grippers, sensors, automatic machine doors and other components.

A wide range of robot accessories can also be integrated into the application. These include mechanical and electric grippers, vacuum grippers, force-torque sensors and 2D or 3D vision systems. The optional Dobot VX500 Smart Camera can be used to detect components, determine their positions and perform inspection tasks.

Integrated Safety Functions

The Dobot CRA Series features more than 20 integrated safety functions and an independent safety controller. These include adjustable collision detection, virtual workspaces and limits for speed, force and movement.

Optional SafeSkin technology enables the robot to detect people or obstacles without physical contact and respond before a potential collision occurs.

The protective measures required for a particular application are determined through an individual risk assessment. In addition to the robot, this assessment must consider the end-of-arm tool, the components, operating speeds and the complete system environment. Depending on the application, additional safety equipment such as laser scanners, safety doors or protective enclosures may be required.

Versatile Applications for the Dobot CRA Series

The Dobot CRA Series is suitable for numerous production and logistics tasks. Typical applications include:

  • CNC machine tending
  • Palletising and depalletising
  • Pick-and-place applications
  • Assembly and screwdriving
  • Packaging and sorting
  • Gluing and dispensing
  • Welding
  • Polishing and surface finishing
  • Quality control and vision-based inspection

Using a Dobot cobot can increase machine utilisation, reduce manual work and improve the reliability of recurring processes. Employees are relieved of monotonous, physically demanding or ergonomically unfavourable activities. At the same time, production remains flexible because the robot can be reconfigured when products change and used for additional tasks.

The Right Dobot CRA Solution for Your Production

When selecting the appropriate model, the required payload and reach are not the only considerations. The weight of the gripper, component geometry, cycle time and accessibility of the machine must also be taken into account. The required machine communication, safety concept and method of supplying raw and finished parts are equally important.

Based on these requirements, Samsys develops a fully coordinated automation solution. From selecting the Dobot cobot to the gripper, vision technology and machine communication, as well as programming, safety equipment and commissioning, you receive a system tailored to your production process. This allows you to automate your manufacturing cost-effectively, increase productivity and remain flexible as future requirements develop.
