Dobot Nova Series – Compact Cobots for Flexible Automation

The Dobot Nova Series was developed for automation tasks where a compact design, simple operation and an attractive appearance are particularly important. These lightweight collaborative robots require very little space and can be integrated flexibly into existing working environments. This makes them suitable for applications in retail, hospitality, laboratories, educational facilities and light production.

The Nova 2 and Nova 5 provide two models for different requirements. Both cobots offer six movable axes, high repeatability and various options for programming and control. Repetitive tasks can therefore be automated without installing a large and complex robot cell.

Dobot Nova 2 and Nova 5

The Dobot Nova 2 has a maximum payload capacity of 2 kilograms and a reach of 625 millimetres. With a robot weight of only 11 kilograms, it can be integrated easily into compact workstations. Its maximum TCP speed is 1.6 metres per second. The Nova 2 is particularly suitable for handling lightweight products, small pick-and-place tasks, presentation applications and automated processes in retail or hospitality.

The Dobot Nova 5 offers a maximum payload of 5 kilograms and a reach of 850 millimetres. Despite its greater performance, the robot arm weighs only 14 kilograms. With a maximum TCP speed of up to 2 metres per second, it can also perform dynamic handling tasks reliably.

Both models achieve a repeatability of ±0.05 millimetres. This allows products, workpieces and tools to be picked up, moved and positioned consistently.

Lightweight and Space-Saving Design

The Dobot Nova Series is characterised by its particularly compact construction. In addition to the lightweight robot arm, the controller is also extremely space-saving, measuring only 200 × 120 × 55 millimetres. With a weight of 1.3 kilograms, the controller can be installed inside counters, cabinets, mobile units or compact machines.

The robot arm can be installed at different angles. This allows the Dobot Nova Series to be mounted on a table, wall or in another suitable position. Flexible system concepts can therefore be implemented even where installation space is limited.

The robot arms have an IP54 protection rating and are designed for ambient temperatures from 0 to 50 degrees Celsius. The compact controller uses passive cooling and therefore does not require a fan.

Simple and Intuitive Programming

DobotStudio Pro is available for programming the Dobot Nova Series. Its graphical user interface makes it easier to create and modify robot programs. Movements and process steps can be arranged clearly, allowing standardised workflows to be configured without extensive programming experience.

The Nova Series also supports the direct teaching of movements. The robot can be guided manually along the required path. The resulting movement can then be replayed within a program and combined with additional process steps.

The robot can be operated using a PC or an application for Android and iOS. Programs can be configured, robot positions adjusted and operating conditions monitored. When products or tasks change, existing sequences can be modified flexibly.

Interfaces for Peripherals and Control Systems

The robot controller provides eight digital inputs and eight digital outputs that support both PNP and NPN signals. Two analogue inputs and two analogue outputs are also available. Grippers, sensors, pushbuttons, signal lights and other components can therefore be incorporated directly into the application.

For communication, the Dobot Nova Series supports TCP/IP, Modbus TCP, RS485 and Modbus RTU. Additional inputs and outputs, as well as an RS485 interface, are available at the end of the robot arm. Electric grippers and other tools can therefore be connected with minimal external wiring.

The required interfaces and components depend on the particular application. A complete solution can combine a gripper, vision system, product detection, higher-level controller and safety equipment.

Safety Functions for Collaborative Applications

The Dobot Nova Series features intelligent sensors and five adjustable collision-detection levels. The sensitivity can therefore be adapted to the particular application. When a collision is detected, the robot movement is stopped.

Additional functions support the limitation of working areas and enable controlled movement sequences. Whether the robot can operate without additional separating safety equipment always depends on the complete application.

A risk assessment must consider not only the cobot but also the end-of-arm tool, the products being moved, potential crushing points, operating speed and working environment. Depending on the result, additional safety measures such as scanners, sensors or protective covers may be required.

Customised Design for Visible Applications

The Dobot Nova Series is also designed for applications where the robot is visible to customers, visitors or patients. Its outer covers can be customised in colours that match a company, brand or existing design concept.

This means that the cobot can be integrated both functionally and visually into retail spaces, exhibition stands, service areas or presentation systems. Its streamlined shape and concealed cable routing help create a clean and professional appearance.

Versatile Application Options

Typical applications for the Dobot Nova Series include:

  • Pick-and-place tasks
  • Sorting and presenting products
  • Preparing and serving beverages
  • Automated retail processes
  • Light assembly and handling tasks
  • Quality inspection and product recognition
  • Laboratory and training applications
  • Exhibition and presentation systems
  • Assistive applications in healthcare environments

The appropriate Dobot cobot depends on the weight, dimensions and properties of the product. The required reach, speed, positioning accuracy and end-of-arm tool must also be considered.
